Memorable Manitobans: Walter Haslem Mueller (1937-2024)

Businessman, municipal official.

Born at Manitou on 23 May 1937, son of Otto Hans Mueller (1904-1993) and Florence Olive Jordan (1911-1991), he attended Manitou Consolidated School, graduating in 1955. After attending the University of Manitoba, he worked at Winnipeg for a time before moving back to Manitou to work in the family hardware store with his father and brother Lewis.

On 21 August 1964, he married schoolteacher Bette Louise Boote of Kaleida and they had two sons, including Jim Mueller (1970-2020). He organized the Pembina Valley Oldtimers baseball team. In recognition of his contributions to the promotion of amateurs sports, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame (2002) and he received a “Sports Builder Award” from the Central Region Sports Association and the Dr. Fern Letain Memorial Award for contributions to minor hockey in the Pembina Valley (1991). He served on the Manitou town council (1968-1993) and was Mayor (1986, 1992-2005).

He was active in numerous community groups, including the Manitou Golf Club, St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Kinsmen, K-40, Central Region Sport Committee, Manitou Merchants’ Association, Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities, Manitou Log House, and the Nellie McClung’s Homes of Manitou.

He died at Manitou on 18 April 2024 and was buried in the Manitou Community Cemetery.
