Robert Stephen Mitchell
|
Educator, tennis player.
Born at Brandon on 24 November 1950, son of Raymond Alvin Mitchell (1920-1987) and Isabella Whyte Stephen (1924-2012), he attended Vincent Massey High School and Brandon University, receiving from the latter a BEd degree. In 1973, he moved to Winnipeg and completed his teacher training at the University of Manitoba. He taught for 22 years at Hutterite colonies near Kenton, Woodlands, Clearwater, Sturgeon Creek, and the Interlake. He later worked in the mental health field.
He developed a passion for tennis after taking up the game at 17. Winning about 100 open titles between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, he gained the rank of number one player in Manitoba in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In 1986, he represented Manitoba at the Senior Canadian Nationals. He coordinated tournaments, taught tennis lessons, and mentored numerous players.
He died at Winnipeg on 12 July 1995, survived by a wife and two children. He was inducted posthumously as a Builder and Player into the Tennis Manitoba Hall of Fame (2024). The open doubles tournament at Clear Lake was renamed the Bob Mitchell Classic in his memory.
