Memorable Manitobans: John Gordon MacLachlan (1886-1971)

Civil engineer.

Born at Lochaber, Quebec on 4 September 1886, he was working as a civil engineer at the time of his enlistment in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He rose to rank of Major during three years of service. After he returned to Canada, he moved to British Columbia where, on 5 October 1920, he married Dorothy Mildred Victoria Mott (1900-1996) at Kamloops. In 1926, they moved to The Pas where he spent 25 years building railways, including the Hudson Bay Railway, Flin Flon Branch, and Sherridon Branch. At the time of his retirement, he was Manager of the Hudson Bay Railway. He died at his Winnipeg residence, 2 Rochester Apartments, on 1 April 1971 and was buried in the Garry Memorial Park.
