Memorable Manitobans: Sigrun Ingibjorg Helgason Lindal (1892-1963)

Educator.

Born at Gimli on 5 May 1892, daughter of H. J. Sigurdardottir (?-?) and G. Helgason (1859-?), she took teacher training and taught at Arnes School (1909, 1914) and Arnes South School (1910, 1911, 1916-1918) and was Principal of Gimli School (1915).

On 22 March 1920, she married Hannes Jacobson [Jakobson] Lindal at Winnipeg and they had six children: Pearl Lindal (c1921-?, wife of Mr. Powers), Violet Anna Lindal (1922-?, wife of Robert J. Hamilton), Hannes Lindal (c1928-1971), Gaylord Lindal (1931-2019), and twins who died in infancy (1920). They lived at Holly Apartments (1921) and Kenwood Apartments (1926) and 912 Jessie Avenue (1941). She was involved with several social and charitable organizations including the 100 Club of Knowles School for Boys (Publicity Committee 1941, Life Membership Committee 1945) and Junior Icelandic league (Publications Committee 1941). After the Second World War, the couple lived at Toronto, Ontario before retiring to California.

She died in Los Angeles County on 4 February 1963 and was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Santa Monica.
