Memorable Manitobans: Emily Melissa Moody Lewis (1854-1939)

Farmer, community activist.

Born at Mitchell, Perth County, Ontario on 15 October 1854, she came to Winnipeg with her family by way of the Dawson Road and moved to Morris in 1876.

On 3 December 1878, she married Irish immigrant James Nettleton Lewis (1839-1923) on her brother's farm located just south of Morris. It was the first marriage in the district. She became the first President of the first Women's Institute in Manitoba when it was formed in 1910.

She died at the Middlechurch Home on 9 May 1939 and was buried in the Morris Cemetery.
