Kathleen Mildred Emily Lewis Jorgenson
|
Farmer, community activist.
Born on the family farm west of Morris on 10 April 1927, daughter of Ethel Lillian McPhaden (1890-1988) and Joseph George Moody “Joe” Lewis (1881-1942), she attended Flowery Bank School and Morris School. Her father died when she was 15 so she set aside plans to become a teacher to help her mother and brother tend the family’s dairy farm and care for her two older siblings born with cerebral palsy. On 8 June 1946, she married Edward Anton “Ed” Jorgenson (1912-1994) at the Morris United Church. They farmed near Ste. Elizabeth and had seven daughters and a son.
In 1972, the couple began opening their home to visitors as a Bed and Breakfast. Soon after they joined the Manitoba Farm Vacation Association. She served on its executive and became President in 1979, holding the position until 1983. She was also involved with the Canadian Country Vacation Association, serving as its President (1981-1984). Over the years, people from around the world became acquainted with Manitoba country life thanks to her kind hospitality. She was a reporter for the Carillon News and was a member of the Valley Agricultural Society, Morris Women's Institute, and Morris United Church Women. She was a dedicated board member for the Morris and District Centennial Museum.
She died at Morris on 20 May 2018.
