Memorable Manitobans: Dougald Johnson (1869-1972)

Pioneer.

Born at Lampton County, Ontario on 4 December 1869, he came to Manitoba with his parents and they arrived at St. Boniface in April 1879. They took horses and oxen to Three Creeks, about two miles south of present-day Austin, and settled in the Forestville district. He attended Emmeline School and Lansdowne College in Portage la Prairie.

He worked at several jobs, starting as a railway telegrapher at Carberry (1889), before going to Montana where he worked at a railway tie camp until 1893. Returning to Canada, he was a grain buyer for James Richardson and Sons at Melbourne (1894) and Western Canada Flour Mills at Grandview (1900-1908). In 1901, he established an agricultural implement agency at Grandview in partnership with his brother James H. Johnson, selling plows, buggies, and binders for seven years. He farmed in the Forestville district (1894-1899) before buying land near Grandview in the latter year. He returned to Forestville in 1908 and purchased his father's homestead, farming there until retirement in 1946. He was a crop reporter for the federal government in the Forestville area from 1920 to 1926.

On 12 January 1898, he married Susannah Frances Hammond (1867-1942) at Austin. They had no children. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters (1894-1926).

He died on 1 August 1972 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
