Memorable Manitobans: Cecil James Hutchings (1897-1983)

Educator, civil servant.

Born at Coldwater, Ontario on 27 May 1897, eldest son of Gilbert and Louise Hutchings, he came to Manitoba where he received a degree from the University of Manitoba. He taught school in rural Manitoba, at Corrie School (1917), Beresford School (?-?), and West Prospect School (?-?), and including service as the Principal of Beulah School (1920-1922), Newdale School (1922-1925), and Holland School (1925-1931). For several years, he was the Director of the Manitoba Department of Education’s correspondence program. He was an active Mason and held several senior positions with the organization. He died at Winnipeg on 25 April 1983.
