Memorable Manitobans: John Saws Holland (1893-1987)

Cleric, educator.

Born at Guelph, Ontario on 24 July 1893, son of Shadrack Holland and Catherine Kelly, he graduated from the Guelph Collegiate Institute then, in August 1911, entered the Society of Jesus at Maison St. Joseph, Sault-au-Recollet at Montreal, Quebec. Two years later, he went to St. Andrew-on-Hudson at Poughkeepsie, New York for studies in Classics. After a year, he continued his education at St. Stanislaus Novitiate at Guelph. He studied philosphy for three years at L'Immaculate Conception at Montreal.

He spent four years at as a teacher of Latin and French at Loyola College at Montreal before studying Theology for four years at L'Immaculate Conception at Montreal. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in August 1925 then return to teaching duties at Loyola. In 1928, he went to St. Bueno's College at St. Asaph, North Wales for further theological studies, returning to teach at Loyola after a year. He was appointed Rector of Campion College at Regina, Saskatchewan in 1930.

He came to Winnipeg to be the Rector of St. Paul's College and St. Paul's High School (1933-1941). He also served as Dean of the College (1937-1938, 1943-1945) and was a member of the University of Manitoba Senate. He continued to teach French and Religion at the High School until 1967 then was Professor Emeritus focusing on the school's alumni association until his death.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 15 November 1987. He is commemorated by Holland Boulevard in Winnipeg.
