Memorable Manitobans: Sherry Lynn Hobson (1956-2016)

Bowler.

Born at Portage la Prairie on 24 September 1956, daughter of Lois Taylor (1931-2017) and Robert Joseph “Guy” Lacroix (1932-2012), at the age of 12 she moved to Winnipeg with her mother and brother, where she attended Kildonan East Secondary School.

In 1974, she began her career as supervisor for the Winnipeg Police Services Communications Centre and retired after 31 years of service. Following her retirement from public safety, she embarked on a second career in management, working as the manager of Chateau Lanes from 2005 to 2015.

An avid and elite competitive tenpin bowler, she competed internationally on behalf of Canada, won five medals at the 2005 World Masters Games, and was named the Canadian Senior Female Bowler of the Year in 2007 and 2010. Her deep love for the sport fueled an extensive legacy of administration at the local, provincial, and national levels. She served on numerous league executives and athletic association boards, ran countless tournaments, and played an integral role during the founding of the Canadian Tenpin Federation (CTF) in 2004. In addition to serving on various national CTF committees, she introduced the CTF Senior Bowler of the Year Awards program. Outside of bowling, she was a passionate fan of CFL football, and found great joy in golf.

She passed away at Winnipeg on 2 May 2016 and was cremated.
