Memorable Manitobans: Knut Eide Haugsoen (1935-2011)

Architect, musician.

Born at Bergen, Norway on 2 April 1935, son of Olav Haugsoen and Britt Margit Eide, as a child he became fascinated with American jazz and learned to play piano by ear. In 1956, after completing high school and compulsory military training, he studied Architecture at the Technische Hochschule Munchen, supporting his studies by performing at a late-night jazz club. During the summers, he returned to Bergen to work for Norwegian architect Know Lund. After graduation, he practiced as an architect in Oslo (1964-1967).

In 1967, he immigrated to the United States to work with famed Chicago architect Mies Van Der Rohe until 1973 when he accepted a teaching position in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. He stayed there for 38 years, teaching and writing on architectural design. In 1980, during a sabbatical leave in California, he studied African music and received a second Masters degree in Architecture. He produced four CDs of music, the third of which was nominated for a Canadian Juno Award. He also composed music for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and improvised live music for film.

He died at Winnipeg on 17 January 2011, shortly before another music CD was released.
