Memorable Manitobans: Borden Hasiuk (1947-2021)

Soldier, educator.

Born in Ukraine in 1947, one of two sons of Teofila “Phyllis” Hasiuk (1919-2003) and Stefan Hasiuk (1920-1999), the family came to Canada in 1949 and eventually settled at Winnipeg. He joined the Canadian militia in 1963 and later served three terms as Colonel of the Fort Garry Horse and one term as Colonel of the Royal Winnipeg Camerons. He retired from the Army in 2003 after a final tour of peacekeeping duty in Bosnia. He was also a teacher and principal in Manitoba, Ontario, China, and Saudi Arabia, including at Libau West School (1971-1972). He died at Tilbury, Ontario on 14 August 2021 and was buried in the Maple Leaf Cemetery at Tilbury. He was survived by his wife and four children.
