Memorable Manitobans: David Joseph Hartley (1871-1952)

Educator, newspaper editor.

Born at Ontario on 26 September 1871, son of Alexander Hartley and Emma Fitzgerald, and brother of William Christopher Hartley, he came to Manitoba by the early 1890s and became a teacher. He taught at Ladywood School (1892-1893) and was Principal of Simpson School / Baldur School (1900-1903) and Killarney School (1904-1910). He was also President (1902) of the Argyle Teachers’ Association.

By 1911, he had moved to Kerrobert, Saskatchewan where was initially involved in real estate and worked in the newsprint industry (c1911-1942), including as editor of the Kerrobert Citizen, after which he retired to Victoria, British Columbia having long-maintained a summer residence there. He married Killarney-born teacher Mary Emily Isabelle Cleave (1890-1984).

He died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria on 28 November 1952 and was buried in the Royal Oak Burial Park at Saanich.
