Memorable Manitobans: Sylvia Jean Guertin-Riley (1936-2023)
Born at Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on 16 September 1936, daughter of George W. Herrod and Phoebe Herrod, her family moved to Winnipeg in 1945. Called to the Manitoba Bar in 1981, she practiced law with the firms of Schwartz McJannet Weinberg Riley (1981-?), McJannet Weinberg Rich (1987-?), and Riley Orle Guertin Born. She was made a Queen's Counsel (1991) and was President of the Manitoba Bar Association (1991-1992).
She served as a Puisne Judge in the Family Division of the Court of Queen's Bench from 1995 to retirement in 2011. In recognition of her community service, she received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).
She was married twice, first on 13 July 1957 to Edward Gabriel Guertin (1937-2020) with whom she had a son and a daughter, and second to lawyer William Pitt “Bill” Riley.
She died at Winnipeg on 23 June 2023.
