Restauranteur.
Born at Winnipeg on 5 October 1921, son of Max Guberman (c1892-1991) and Bessie Rose Cherashny (1898-1996), in 1958 he opened a new specialty restaurant at 1049 Pembina Highway called the Original House of Pancakes, basing the name on a similarly named enterprise at Portland, Oregon. For the first several years, the operation was loosely associated with its American counterpart but, since the mid-1960s, has been wholly independent. The pancake-house concept became a popular favourite for family outings, business lunch meetings, student gatherings, and special occasions. Every Friday and Saturday, the after-theatre crowd lined up for tables into the wee hours of the night. Over the years, Wally and his brother Monty Harold Guberman (1923-1990) opened other Original Pancake Houses around the city: The Forks, the Clarion Hotel at Polo Park, and 220 McGillivray Avenue. He died at Los Angeles, California on 9 August 2004 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
