Memorable Manitobans: Cyril Frederick “Slim” Greene (1889-1963)

Journalist, broadcaster.

Born at Tunbridge Wells, England on 1 January 1889, son of Florence Greene, he came to Canada in 1908. He was working as Secretary at the Winnipeg YMCA when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Initially he served with the University Battalion, transferring later to the Imperial Wiltshire Regiment.

On his return to Canada, he founded the Winnipeg Mirror weekly newspaper and was also Managing Director of the Winnipeg Home and Property Owners Association, and Editor of the Grain Trade Publication. During the Second World War, he worked with Defence Industries Limited then, in 1946, he formed C. F. Greene Public Relations Consultants. For the last 17 years of his life, he produced the program “Neighborly News From the Prairies” for CBC Radio.

On 8 October 1927, he married schoolteacher Dorothy Tresidder “Dodo” Bishop (1895-1990) at Winnipeg and they had two children: Joan Greene (wife of P. T. Guttormsson) and Douglas F. Greene. Active in the community, he was one of the founders and Secretary-Treasurer of the Associated Community Clubs of Greater Winnipeg, Executive Director of the Manitoba Division of the Community Planning Association, the director of Winnipeg's 75th anniversary celebration, and Executive Secretary with the United Nations in Winnipeg. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Royal Canadian Legion, St. George's Anglican Church, and St. Luke's Anglican Church. He was an Independent candidate for the Winnipeg South constituency in the 1949 provincial general election.

He died at his Winnipeg residence, Suite 5 - 141 Wellington Crescent, on 5 December 1963 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
