Memorable Manitobans: Stuart Geekie (c1851-1921)

Businessman, architect.

Born at Perthshire, Scotland around 1851, he came to Canada around 1878 and settled on a homestead near Strathclair. He served as a clerk for the Rural Municipality of Strathclair (1884-1888). He later moved to the Dauphin area and was involved in various business activities, including operating a saw mill in the forests of Riding Mountain in partnership with A. J. McPherson. He served as the first Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Dauphin (1897-1899) and designed the Dauphin Town Hall. He was an active member of the St. Andrew's Society of Dauphin. In his later years, he spent much of his time on a ranch near Lake Winnipegosis. Two weeks before his death, he went to Strathclair to visit his brother John. He died there on 24 February 1921 and was buried in the Strathclair Cemetery.
