Memorable Manitobans: William Garrioch (1787-?)

Fur trader, schoolmaster.

Born in Stromness, Orkney Islands in 1787, he joined the Hudson's Bay Company in 1807 as a potential schoolmaster. For most of his years with the Company he worked in the fur trade. He retired in 1822 to Image Plain to reside next to his father-in-law, William Hemmings Cook. In 1823 he taught school in the Red River Settlement under the supervision of Rev. John West, and by 1825 he was a schoolmaster for the Church Missionary Society.
