Memorable Manitobans: Laura Ethel Sparling Gardner (1924-2017)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 21 October 1924, daughter of Frederick Walter S. Sparling and Gratia Julia Newman (1890-1969), granddaughter of daughter of Frederick Leslie Newman, she married William Cooper Gardner on 3 July 1947 and they had three children. Active in community affairs, she was appointed to the board of the Manitoba Centennial Corporation (1963), helped to organize the 1967 Pan American Games, and assisted with the 1967 federal leadership campaign of Duff Roblin. She died at Winnipeg on 3 July 2017.
