Memorable Manitobans: Raymond Sutcliffe “Ray” Evans (1911-1998)

Printer, publisher.

Born at Reston on 20 February 1911, youngest son of Henry C. Evans (1861-1955) and Marion Cobb (1868-1945), he completed high school then apprenticed as a printer at the Reston Recorder newspaper. During the Second World War, he was a flight instructor at the Virden Flying Training School. In 1945, he purchased the Morden Times and published it until 1954. He served as President of the Manitoba Weekly Newspapers Association (1951-1953).

In 1954, he was appointed Queen’s Printer for the Province of Manitoba and was responsible for the first printing of Hansards, in 1958. He developed the printing of computerized loose leaf Statues in 1970, a first in North America. He retired in 1976.

He was married twice, first on 27 December 1939 to Mildred Agnes Spangelo (1914-1987) and they had a son and two daughters. In 1954, the family moved to the Silver Heights area of Winnipeg, where he lived until his death. In 1988, he married Violet Hildegarde “Vi” Thorell-Anderson (1915-2004) with whom he had worked in the Queen’s Printer’s office. He was a member of the Silver Heights United Church and served on the board for the Red River Exhibition. He retired in 1976.

He died at the Grace Hospital on 28 March 1998.
