Memorable Manitobans: Jocelyn Adele Saul Dubienski (1922-2011)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 1 March 1922, daughter of Evelyn Mary Herbert (?-1957) and Merle Victor Saul (1886-1931), she attended Kelvin High School and University of Manitoba, serving as President of the UMSU Women's Association before graduating with a BA degree. She then worked for a short time as a feature writer at the Winnipeg Free Press before moving to Montreal during the Second World War and working as a civilian code writer for the War Department. After the war, she worked as a social worker with the Family Bureau to provide services for returning military personnel.

On 5 June 1947, she married Ian Ventress Dubienski at Westminster United Church and they had four sons and two daughters before divorcing. She returned to the workforce in 1964 as a rehabilitation counselor in the Vocational Rehabilitation Program in the Manitoba Department of Health and Welfare, retiring after 24 years as Director of the program, after introducing numerous innovations. She volunteered with such organizations as Citizen's Advocacy, Stradbrook Optimist House, United Way of Winnipeg, and Junior League. In recognition of her service, she received a YWCA Women of Distinction Award (1988).

She died at the Grace Hospital on 10 April 2011.
