Memorable Manitobans: George Edward Wesley Down (1913-1994)
Community activist.
Born at Holland on 4 February 1913, son of Joseph Oliver Down (1885-1969) and Olive Pearl Staples (1885-1962), he served for 39 years on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Agricultural Museum, for which he received the Prix Manitoba Award. On 14 October 1939, he married Beatrice Louise Ferris (1913-1964) in the RM of Victoria and they had several children. He died at Portage la Prairie on 31 July 1994 and was buried in the Brookdale Cemetery.
