Memorable Manitobans: E. C. “Bert” Doerksen (c1918-2003)Construction contractor. He spent his youth in Kansas and Colorado, moved back to Manitoba during the Great Depression and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He worked on many large construction projects including the Little Pic River Bridge in northwestern Ontario, Lake Diefenbaker Dam in Saskatchewan, Ruttan Mine at Leaf Rapids, and the airport at Colombo, Sri Lanka. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and woodworking. He died, aged 85, on 8 November 2003.
