David West Crandall

Surveyor, civil servant.
Born at Dorchester, New Brunswick on 18 November 1933, son of Nora and Charles Crandall, he attended the Maritime Forest Ranger School at Fredericton and graduated in 1952. After completing a diploma course in surveying at the Nova Scotia Land Survey Institute, he joined the Manitoba Surveys and Mapping Branch in January 1954. He was responsible for surveys of remote northern base lines and control surveys during the summer. He received a commission as a Manitoba Land Surveyor in 1956.
He returned to Nova Scotia in 1957 and spent two years in private survey practice including extensive experience in boundary disputes and court litigation. He returned to Manitoba in 1959 and later accepted a position with the Department of Highways. He rejoined the Surveys and Mapping Branch in 1965 and spent several years involved in the completion of interprovincial boundary surveys for the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Boundary Commission. He assumed responsibility for all field operations in 1969, became Chief of Control Surveys and Topographical Mapping in 1980, and was appointed Director of Surveys in November 1983. He served in the role until retirement in December 1989. He served as Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Canadian Council of Land Surveyors, Chairman of the Canadian Council on Surveying and Mapping, Manitoba representative on the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names, and Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Association of Manitoba Land Surveyors.
In 1959, he married Doris Velma McAllister (1936-2022) of Sackville, New Brunswick and they had three children, including Charles David Crandall (1960-2018).
He died at Winnipeg on 18 November 2019.
