Memorable Manitobans: Claude-Godefroy Coquart (1706-1765)

Missionary.

Born at Melun, France, he came to Quebec in 1739 and replaced Father Aulneau as the chaplain accompanying La Vérendrye in 1741. He remained at Michilimackinac until 1743, when he came to Fort La Reine (Portage la Prairie), thus becoming the first missionary to reach such a westerly point. But he was soon back on the St. Lawrence River.
