Memorable Manitobans: Harold Marion “Pip” Cawker (1930-2002)

Architect.

Born at Winnipeg on 31 October 1930, son of Harold Mitchell Cawker (1888-1957) and Alice Marian “Mollie” Willcox (1886-1986), he attended Laura Second School and Gordon Bell High School then worked for Norwich Union before graduating from United College. He then entered the Architecture program at the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1955.

He worked for a succession of architectural firms, including Smith Carter Searle, Zunic and Sobkowich, Hudson Bay House, Duncan Rattray Peters Searle, and Moody Moore and Partners. He spent 20 years working for the Department of National Defense at Winnipeg. Among his projects was an expansion of the Centennial Hall at the University of Winnipeg and the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church.

On 19 May 1956, he married Donna Marie McElheran at the St. Matthew's Anglican Church and they had three sons and two daughters. He was a member of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and Winnipeg Sketch Club.

He died at his Winnipeg home on 6 July 2002.
