Cleric, missionary.
Born in Augusta Township, Grenville County, Ontario on 13 January 1879, son of John George Carson (1850-1920) and Mahala Martha Alder (1851-1937), he graduated with a BA degree from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1902 and moved to Winnipeg to study law. He changed his area of study and, in 1906, graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree (1906) from Wesley College. While in training, he worked a circuit minister, including at the Louise Bridge Methodist Church for around a year (c1905-1906). On 6 September 1906, he married Emma Florence Dunfield (1885-1966) at Maryland Methodist Church. Florence’s family lived at 484 Maryland Street and her mother, Mary McKillop Dunfield (1852-1930), is considered to be the founder of Maryland Methodist Church. The couple left Winnipeg in November 1906 and went to the Canadian Inland Mission at Chengtu, China. They were supported, in part, by the Maryland Methodist Church. They had two children, Rev. Dr. Marvin John Dunfield Carson (1908-1981) and Judge Egbert Harold Alder Carson (1910-1994), both born at Chengtu. Egbert Carson worked as a missionary and helped to establish the upper school at the mission. In 1910, he was appointed to the circuit at Chungking and died there of typhoid on 14 June 1910.
