Memorable Manitobans: George Butterworth (c1885-1952)

School official.

Born in England around 1885, he immigrated to Canada around 1907 and settled in the what would become the Village of Brooklands, then still part of the Rural Municipality of Rosser. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

On 21 March 1908, he married Ada Taylor (c1885-1957, daughter of John and Harriet Taylor) at Winnipeg. They had four children: Mona Butterworth (1908-1972, wife of Percy Day), John Vincent Butterworth (1913-1969), Gladys Mary Butterworth (1915-1978, widow of George Austin MacDuff, remarried to Nick Sedak), and Doris Butterworth (1919-1982). The family lived at 1887 Alexander Avenue (1916), 16 Gallagher Avenue West (1921), 1823 Alexandra Avenue (1926), and 331 Keewatin Street (?-1952).

He was active in community affairs and succeeded John Haddow as Secretary-Treasurer of the Brooklands School District (1919-1930). During this period, he also served as Returning Officer (1921) and Acting Secretary-Treasurer (1923) for the Village of Brooklands, following its establishment. He later worked as a timekeeper and manager for the R. McMillan Coal Company.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 3 March 1952 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In 1961, he was commemorated posthumously with the naming of Butterworth School.
