Born at Acton, Ontario in 1871, he came to Winnipeg in 1903 and worked as proprietor of the Brown Construction Company, constructing building from Thunder Bay (Ontario) to Edson (Alberta) prior to retirement in the mid-1930s.
He was married twice, first on 11 March 1903 to Lena Elizabeth Burkell (1884-1910) at Neepawa and they had two children: Norma Gertrude Brown (1906-1907) and Robert Arthur “Art” Brown (1908-?). On 13 September 1911, he married his widow’s younger sister, Anzonetta Gertrude Burkell (1890-1973) and they had three children: James Orwell Brown (1911-1999, husband of Georgina Potter Reddie), Samuel Eccles “Sam” Brown (1923-1995, husband of Francis ?), and Merrill Brown. The family lived at 791 Preston Avenue from around 1910 to his death.
He died at the Grace Hospital on 4 November 1959 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
