Memorable Manitobans: Garfield Vernon “Garry” Brickman (1937-2026)

Lawyer.

Born at Dauphin on 18 March 1937, son of Stanley Vernon Brickman (1906-1972) and Evelyn Grace Amos (1908-1993), after graduating from high school, he attended the Manitoba Normal School then taught at Polson School (1957-1958).

He developed an interest in politics and was active as a volunteer at the provincial and federal levels. He worked as an executive assistant for the Attorney General of Manitoba then attended law school. He spent about two years as a Crown attorney then joined a private law practice, spending four decades with the firm of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman, interrupted by a period of service as Special Counsel to Premier Sterling Rufus Lyon. He was made a Queen's Counsel (1980).

On 25 October 1957, he married schoolteacher Marla Jean Thompson (1937-2019) and they had two sons. The family had a summer cottage on Pistol Lake near Minaki, Ontario. He served on the boards of several charitable organizations, including the Festival du Voyageur, MS Society of Canada, Red River Exhibition Association (President, 1990-?), Manitoba Historical Society, and Manitoba Life Lease Occupants Association.

He died at Winnipeg on 8 March 2026.
