Memorable Manitobans: Peter Boychuk (1931-2023)
Civil servant, inventor. Born at Winnipeg on 6 July 1931, one of three children of Peter and Ecaterina Bohajczuk [Boyzuk], he began working as a fireman with the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1959, he became a technical engineer with the Province of Manitoba, serving until retirement in 1987. He designed many of the province's highway signs and his most notable contribution was the design of the Orbit roadside trash receptacles. In retirement, he designed and marketed a unique wooden pan for baking cakes called Peter Pan Wood Cake Pans. On 19 May 1951, he married Grace Elizabeth Good (1929-2014) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had four children. He died at Winnipeg on 11 March 2023.
