Memorable Manitobans: William Liguori Bertrand (1865-1960)

Confectioner, tobacconist.

Born in 1865, he came to Brandon in 1882 and started a confectionary business, later moving into the Bertrand Block on Rosser Avenue in partnership with A. P. Jeffrey. William Bertrand and Company manufactured confections and imported foreign and domestic tobacco, and sold them at retail. He was especially known for “humbug” candies that he shipped across Canada.

He was married twice, first to Florence Pyke (c1873-1899) with whom he had a son, Clarence Leighton Bertrand (1894-1961). On 19 August 1903, he married Mabel Elizabeth Cumming (1883-1952) at Winnipeg and they had six children: Gordon Bertrand (1904-?), Kathleen Virginia Bertrand (1906-?), Kenneth “Bert” Bertrand (?-?), Roderick Valentine “Rod” Bertrand (1911-1994), May Elizabeth Bertrand (1914-?), and John Arthur Cumming Bertrand (1916-1984). He was a brother-in-law of Arthur Page Jeffery.

He died at Brandon on 20 July 1960 was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
