Memorable Manitobans: Josiah Jones Bell (1845-1931)

Journalist.

Born at Carleton Place, Ontario to Robert Bell (1808-1894) and Emmeline Sedate (?-?), he graduated from Queen’s University in 1864 and served as a journalist and publisher of the Brockville Recorder. Later, he was editor of publications of the Mines Department of Ottawa. During the 1870 Wolseley Expedition, he served as an ensign in the First (Ontario) Battalion of Riflemen. He documented the Expedition’s travel with photographs and diary entries which were acquired in 2001 by the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections. He wrote a first-hand account of the Expedition, The Red River Expedition, which was published across three issues of The Canadian Magazine (November 1898, December 1898, and January 1899). He died at Rockcliffe, Carleton County, Ontario on 23 October 1931.
