Merchant.
Born in Scotland on 10 January 1837, son of Joseph Bathgate (?-1856) and Grace Hyslop (?-1874), brother of William Bathgate, he came to Winnipeg in 1873. He operated a wholesale business with Robert Gerrie. In 1882 he transferred to real estate, and later exported grain as well. His residence was designed in 1892 by Winnipeg architect Charles H. Wheeler. He died at Winnipeg on 17 March 1905. He is commemorated by Bathgate Bay in Winnipeg.
