Memorable Manitobans: Elmer Bartel (1934-2014)
Born at Kleefeld in 1934, he attended Gruenfeld School and graduated from Steinbach Christian High School. Entering the field of education, he taught in rural Manitoba at Friedensfeld School and Montezuma School (Principal, 1960-1961), Flin Flon, and Neepawa. He was Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of Special Education for the Beautiful Plains School Division from the 1970s into the early 1980s and Superintendent of the Garden Valley School Division (c1984-1992). An active member of the Gideons and his church board, he was Moderator of Manitoba Baptist Churches and was involved with the Black Forest Academy (Germany), Providence College, and Whyte Ridge Baptist Church. In 1956, he married Anne Dueck (1933-2011) and they had two daughters and a son. He died at Winnipeg on 6 April 2014 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery.
