Memorable Manitobans: Marie Mamie Caroline Conrad Barrie (1908-1978)Educator. Born at Swan Lake on 6 March 1908, daughter and one of thirteen children to Jacob Conrad (c1881-1970) and Celina Fraser (c1884-1959), she went by her second name (Mamie) and grew up at Swan Lake (1911) before accompaning her family to the Marringhurst district (1916-1926) at 25-3-13W. She graduated grade eight with honors in 1921 and, following teacher training around 1925, her work in rural Manitoba classrooms included a Principalship of Vermette School (1926-1928) and teaching at Gascon School (?-?). She married Louis Emil Barrie (1900-1978) and had three daughters and one son. She died at Maple Ridge Hospital in British Columbia on 6 August 1978 with burial in the local cemetery.
