Memorable Manitobans: Steven Lawrence “Steve” Banera (1933-2018)

Educator.

Born at Teulon on 17 April 1933, son of Bill Banera (?-1985) and Sadie Banera (?-1998), he was educated at Chatfield School, Teulon High School, Central Normal School (1954-1955), University of Winnipeg, and University of Manitoba. He starting teaching at the age of 16, working at Willowview School (1949-1950), Chatfield School (1955-1956), and Brant School (1956-1958). He served as the Principal of Ruth Hooker School (c1968), retiring from administration in 1988. He was member of the Selkirk town council (six years), Selkirk Kiwanis Club, Gimli Kiwanis Club, Chatfield Oldtimers Get Together Club, and Selkirk United Church. In 2003, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Chatfield Cardinals (1950s). He died at Selkirk on 25 February 2018.
