Memorable Manitobans: Muriel Jean Arpin (1914-1982)

Lawyer, community activist.

Born at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on 22 November 1914, daughter of Mary and John Phillips, she received BA and LLB degrees, and began working as a teacher before becoming the first woman to practice law in the Exchequer Court of Canada. Active in many organizations, she served on the boards of the Provincial Council of Women of Manitoba, National Council of Women of Canada, John Howard Society, Elizabeth Fry Society, and Manitoba Advisory Council on the Status of Women (Chair, 1980). In recognition of her community service, she was received a YWCA Woman of the Year Award (1977), Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977), City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1982), United Way Community Service Award (1982), and was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt (1982). She and husband Roland Joseph Arpin (1913-1996) had four children. She died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 20 October 1982 and was buried in the Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
