Historic Sites of Manitoba: Kraft Block / Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Legion Hall (608-610 Selkirk Avenue, Winnipeg)

This one-storey brick building on Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg, measuring 33 feet by 75 feet, was designed by local architect Max Zev Blankstein. It was built in 1920 by day labour for owner Stanley I. Kraft at a cost of about $12,000. In its original configuration, the building contained two retail spaces, one of which hosted the Kraft and Trasiewiez Pool Hall operated by the owner.

In 1948, the building was renovated to house the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Branch No. 141 which opened officially on 10 September 1948. Occupied by the Legion until the 1970s when they built a new building to the west, at the time of a 2024 site visit, the original building was occupied by a church but was unrecognizable from its earlier appearance.
