Historic Sites of Manitoba: Rosentzweig Block / Rosen Apartments / Silver Apartments / Granville Block (51-53 Derby Street, Winnipeg)

Formerly located on Derby Street in Winnipeg, a two-storey brick building, measuring 44 feet by 48 feet, was designed by local architect David A. Abramovitch and built in 1907 by contractors John P. Shier and ? Walker for owners Joseph Ganetzky and Abraham Rosentzweig at a cost of about $7,200. In its original configuration, the building contained two retail spaces on the main floor and two residential apartments on the second floor.

In the mid-1910s, the building was known as the Rosen Apartments, and around 1921, it was renamed to the Silver Apartments for owner Abraham Silver. It continued to be known as the Silver Apartments until mid-1935 when was renamed the Granville Block.

The building was demolished in conjunction with the Lord Selkirk Park housing development. The building and a portion of the property was taken over by the city when Dufferin Avenue was rerouted southward to make additional space for the project.
