Historic Sites of Manitoba: Riewitz Grocery (335 Union Avenue West, Winnipeg)

This one-storey wood frame building at the northeast corner of Union Avenue West and Roch Street in the Elmwood area of Winnipeg, measuring 18 feet by 24 feet, was designed by local architect Max Zev Blankstein. It was built in 1910 by day labour for grocer Louis Riewitz (?-?) at a cost of about $600 for use as a neighbourhood grocery store. Known by other names during its history, including the Grand Central Grocery and Meats (circa 1971), at the time of a 2023 site visit the building was used fully as a private residence.
