Historic Sites of Manitoba: Postage Stamp Province 1870 (RM of Lac du Bonnet)

The Province of Manitoba was created by the proclamation of the Manitoba Act on 15 July 1870. Among the concessions granted to the inhabitants of the Red River Settlement were provision for separate schools, a guarantee of 1,400,000 acres of land for the European-Aboriginal inhabitants in recognition of aboriginal title to the land, a constitution similar to the old provinces, government by a Legislative Council and Assembly, and representation in the House of Commons. The eastern boundary of this province began at a point 96 degrees West of Greenwich, just west of this site.

This monument was erected on 31 October 2000 by the Lac du Bonnet Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee.
