This 2½ storey, brick building was designed by architect John Hamilton Gordon Russell and built in 1903 for businessman John Duncan McArthur. After his death in 1927, his widow continued to reside there until 1950. By 1959, it was owned and operated as the Sir Hugh John Macdonald Memorial Hostel, later known as Macdonald Youth Services. The building is a municipally-designated historic site.
