Historic Sites of Manitoba: Walter Kipling Plaque (1950 Pacific Avenue West, Winnipeg)

Located on the grounds of Brooklands School (within which the Brooklands Day Care Centre operates) in Winnipeg, this commemorative plaque honours local activist Walter Everett Kipling. Installed on 13 October 2004, it was dedicated to his community contributions by the Brooklands Day Care, Brooklands Residents Association, Brooklands School, Brooklands Pioneer Seniors Citizens, and the Brooklands Youth and Community Committee.

Walter Everett Kipling was born at Sylvania, Saskatchewan on 1 March 1930, son of Earl Kipling (1903-1999) and Helen Kipling (1904-1994). He enlisted in the Canadian Army in October 1945, and again from April 1951 through June 1960, during the latter of which he was posted to the Korean peninsula during the Korean War. In Manitoba by the late 1950s, he resided in Brooklands and worked at Labatts Brewery during the 1960s before joining St. James-Assiniboia School Division and working as a janitor at local schools. He retired from the Division following 27 years of service. He was active with the ABC Bowling League for over two decades and was a member of the Brooklands Pioneer Senior Citizens Club, Brooklands-Weston Legion, and served on the Board of Directors for Brooklands Day Care for over 20 years. Around 1955, he married Charlotte Joyce Paxman (1934-2008) and they had one daughter and three sons. He died at the Riverview Health Centre on 9 January 2004.
