A monument in the Rural Municipality of Mountain, dedicated on 9 August 1998, marks the point where, in 1898, the Canadian Northern Railway ended and the Cowan Trail began. Settlers arriving in the Swan River Valley were forced to disembark here and cross the Duck Mountains on foot. The trail was named for James Cowan.
