Historic Sites of Manitoba: Bryce House (99 Assiniboine Street, Emerson, Municipality of Emerson-Franklin)This two-storey brick house in Emerson was constructed in 1883 by its first owner, John Bryce, a pioneer businessman and contractor, probably using bricks manufactured at Bryce’s brick yard. It was soon acquired by its second owner, Duncan McArthur, a prominent banker. It was built at the end of Emerson’s early period of economic prosperity. A land boom in 1880-1882 brought rapid expansion to this town, established in 1873, but an ensuing province-wide depression destroyed any ambitions that Emerson would rival Winnipeg in size. The house is a municipally-designated heritage building (1993).
