The Valgardson Shanty, built in 1906, was typical of the humble residential conditions in which many Gimli pioneers first lived. It was a shed-roofed, one-room abode that could house as many as ten people. The well-known writer W. D. Valgardson, whose novels and short stories include reminiscences about Gimli, lived here for a time in the 1940s. Re-purposed as a barber shop, the little utilitarian building's front roof ridge had a modest cornice and brackets.
