Historic Sites of Manitoba: St. Jude’s Anglican Church (780 Home Street, Winnipeg)

In August 1906, the Parish of St Jude’s was established at the southwest corner of Home Street and Wellington Avenue in Winnipeg. Initially worshiping in a tent, the congregation commissioned local architects Samuel Hooper and Charles Henry Walker to design a new church. A one-storey wood frame structure, measuring 34 feet by 74 feet, was built later that year, with a seating capacity of about 400, and at a cost of about $4,500. It was dedicated officially by Archbishop Samuel Pritchard Matheson on 15 November 1906.

Eight years later, in May 1914, plans were made to replace the original church with a brick building. Within a month, a tender had been accepted and the foundation stone was laid in the evening of 14 July 1914. Designed by local architect Henry William Greene and built by contractor Aaron Grey at a cost of $22,000, the new church was ready by St. Jude's Day, 28 October 1914.

Among the clerics of St. Jude’s was Nelson C. Smith.

A service of deconsecration was held at St. Jude's on 11 February 1974 and the building demolished later that year. The Parish was amalgamated with that of St. Patrick’s on Valour Road to become the Parish of St. Patrick’s and St. Jude’s.

The site is now occupied by a multi-storey residential complex.
