Historic Sites of Manitoba: Shilo Military Monuments (Shilo, Municipality of North Cypress-Langford)

Several monuments stand at this site, known as Artillery Park, at Canadian Forces Base Shilo in the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford.

One monument topped by a sundial was erected as a memorial for 17 soldiers of the Second Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, who died enroute to Fort Lewis, Washington in one of Canada’s worst railway collisions, at Canoe River, British Columbia on 21 November 1950. It is flanked by two 25-pound guns presented to CFB Shilo by the Canadian Forces School of Artillery to commemorate its service at Shilo from 1946 to 1970.

A second monument commemorates the Royal Canadian Artillery Soldier Apprentice Program which ran at CFB Shilo from 1954 to 1967.

A third monument commemorates G. J. Ross Flewin who served at CFB Shilo as a pilot in 1956 and as a gunnery instructor in 1959. He lost his life while piloting a light aircraft on a routine training flight on 17 January 1964.

A fourth monument bears two commemorative plaques. One unveiled on 30 June 2012 is for Canadian airborne gunners who have served Canadians with pride and distinction. The second was moved here, along with the monument, by the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in July 2000. It had previously stood at what was known as Proctor Field, dedicated on 7 September 1971 in memory of Major H. D. Proctor, battalion commanding officer, after he was killed by collision with an aircraft while making his first parachute descent on 7 September 1942 at Fort Benning, Georgia, USA.
