Historic Sites of Manitoba: Salisbury House Restaurant (1545 Main Street, Winnipeg)

This one-storey brick building, at the southeast corner of the intersection of Matheson Avenue East and Main Street in Winnipeg, was constructed in 1963 as a coffee shop for the Salisbury House restaurant chain. It was popular for many years and included members of The Guess Who among its loyal patrons.

The restaurant with its iconic red roof closed in April 2023. Reasons cited for the closure included its small size, rising food prices, inflation, an increase in the minimum wage paid to staff, and washrooms that were not compliant with modern codes. The building was put up for sale.
